Written in the Flag: Cringe things people actually say to Veterans

“Did you get PTSD?”

“I hope you didn’t get PTSD”

“I almost joined the military but…”

“_____ is like war.”

“My cousin said it wasn’t that bad over there.”

”My uncle was in Vietnam, he never talks about it.”

“I don’t know how anyone comes back from war.”

“My nephew was in Iraq, he’s had a lot of problems from PTSD since he came home.”

“Did you lose anyone?”

“I didn’t support the war.”

“Did you kill anyone?”

“I think this uptick in mass shootings is because we’ve got all these guys coming home from the war all Fucked in the head.”

Written in the Silhouette: Things Veterans Actually Need

I am an American Veteran. I was a warrior and a member of a team. I served the people of the United States and lived the military values. When I come home:

I need community.

I need opportunity.

I need my skills and certifications to be recognized by the civilian world.

I need time to readjust.

I need to feel normal.

I need to be proud of my service.

I need purpose.
