Artist Statement

My artistic journey began as a way to process memories from my time in Iraq. Painting those experiences helped me in a profound way and I decided to dedicate all my time to creating art that depicted the real experience of war.

We live in a society that only understands the experience of war through the often skewed lens of hollywood movies. In reality, it’s a complex mix of boredom and brotherhood, levity and laughter, fragility and fear, chaos and courage. Its an overarching sense of purpose. For good or bad, you were part of something… you mattered.

The artwork I create is meant to be a window into some of those feelings.

I use real photos and memories from frontline service members as references for the scenes depicted in my pieces. When you see them, you are looking through the eyes of real service members that actually lived those moments. I invite you to close your eyes and allow yourself to imagine what that experience would have felt like.

About the artist

An award winning artist, Logan Benson grew up in St. Cloud Minnesota. He joined the Army National Guard in 2004 as a Combat Engineer. His unit was deployed to Iraq in 2010, where he served as a Route Clearance Truck Commander responsible for finding and destroying improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

Logan turned to art later in life as way to process memories from his time in Iraq. His artwork pays homage to the experience of veterans by depicting scenes that actually happened shown from the point of view of real American service-members. As he says it: "There is plenty of military themed artwork that looks like it came out of a Rambo movie. I want my pieces to reflect real experiences of US service members."

Logan currently lives in Minnesota with his wife and two dogs. His artwork has been displayed and admired in exhibitions across the country. .
